Deep Cleaning vs Regular Cleaning in NJ Homes
The question I hear most from new customers in Union, Essex and Bergen counties is simple: do I need a deep clean or just a regular cleaning? The short answer is that it depends on the last time the house was properly cleaned, not on how tidy it looks today. Here is how I explain it.
What a regular cleaning covers
A standard house cleaning is maintenance. It keeps a home that is already in decent shape from sliding backward. On a typical visit, our trained cleaning professionals work through the main living areas and focus on the surfaces you touch and walk on every day.
- Kitchen: countertops, sink, the outside of appliances, a wipe of the stovetop, and floors.
- Bathrooms: toilet, tub or shower, vanity, mirrors, and floors.
- Bedrooms and living areas: dusting of reachable surfaces, vacuuming, and mopping hard floors.
- Trash and general tidying in the areas we clean.
Regular cleaning works best on a recurring schedule, whether that is weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or a custom rhythm. The more often we come, the less buildup there is to fight.
What a deep clean covers
A deep clean is a reset. It takes more time and more detail, and it goes after the places a standard visit does not reach. Think of the soap scum that has built up on shower glass, grease on the range hood, dust along trim and door frames, and the grime that collects behind and under things.
- Heavier scrubbing of tubs, tile and grout in bathrooms.
- Degreasing of the kitchen, including cabinet fronts and the area around the stove.
- Detailed dusting of vents, ceiling fans, door frames and light fixtures.
- More thorough floor work, including edges and corners that routine mopping skips.
Because it is labor heavy, a deep clean takes noticeably longer than a standard visit. That is the main reason it is quoted differently.
Why a deep clean is usually the first visit
When we start with a new home, we almost never know when it was last cleaned in detail. Even a house that looks neat can have months of buildup in the places people do not see. If we jump straight into a light maintenance clean, we spend the visit on the surface and leave the real buildup behind. Then it never gets addressed.
Starting with a deep clean sets the baseline. After that, regular visits stay quick and consistent because we are maintaining a clean home instead of trying to catch up on a dirty one.
This matters a lot in North Jersey. Older colonials, Victorians and Cape Cods in Union and Essex counties have trim, radiators, window sills and layered floors that hold dust. Winter road salt and slush get tracked in and leave residue along entryways and floor edges. Spring pollen settles on every sill. Larger homes in Morris and Bergen counties, often with finished basements and extra bathrooms, simply have more surface area for it all to build up. And lake homes around Lake Mohawk and Lake Hopatcong in Sussex County can sit closed up for stretches, collecting dust that a quick visit will not handle.
If you are moving, we also do move-in and move-out cleaning, and after renovations we offer post-construction cleaning. Those are separate services built for those situations.
Oven, fridge and cabinet interiors are add-ons
This is the part people get wrong, so I will be direct. Cleaning inside the oven, inside the fridge, and inside cabinets is not automatically included in a deep clean, and it is not included in a regular cleaning either. These are add-ons. They need to be requested and they need to appear on your quote.
Why? Because each one is its own job. A baked-on oven can take real time and real effort. A fridge has to be emptied, wiped down shelf by shelf, and put back. Cabinets usually need to be emptied first so we can clean the inside properly. Folding them into every visit would either slow everything else down or leave you with a quote that does not match the work.
The same goes for other extras. Inside windows, blinds, baseboards, laundry, linens, garages and basements are also add-ons you ask for up front. We would rather you know exactly what you are getting than assume something is covered and feel let down afterward.
What to do: when you contact us, mention any add-ons you want. Oven, fridge, cabinets, whatever matters most to you. Then check that they are listed on the quote before the appointment. If it is on the quote, it gets done. If it is not, it is not part of the visit.
How to decide which one you need
- Choose a deep clean if it is your first visit with us, if it has been a long time since a detailed clean, if you have pets, or if the home has just come through winter or a busy season.
- Choose a regular cleaning if the home has been cleaned professionally on a schedule and you just want to keep it that way.
- Pets: pets are welcome, and we offer pet hair removal and pet area sanitation if you want them added.
- Apartments and brownstones in Jersey City and Hoboken with frequent tenant turnover often need a deep clean or a move-out clean between residents.
What affects the quote
We do not post a flat number, because every home is different. The price is driven by the size of the home, its condition, how often you want us to come, and which add-ons you request. Tell us about the home and we text you an exact quote. Same-day appointments are available in many cases, and we bring all supplies and equipment. If you have allergies or product preferences, let us know and we will work around them.
